The Attic Expeditions. This movie has many layers of meta-mindfuck to it. It made me question the reality of what I experience. Just what the hell is going on here? Am I an immortal magician who hid a grimoire from an evil wizard? Am I lucid dreaming while undergoing open-brain surgery? Or am I being cared for in a sanitarium by Miss Abby Thelema while being fed amanita mushrooms to reveal my secrets? Who knows…?
Jacob’s Ladder. Another mindfuck similar in form to the Attic Expeditions. The character flashes between various versions of his own life. Some seem more real than others. Many dreamlike sequences unfold into a deeper level of understanding and acceptance for the protagonist. The concept of the bardos–zones between death and rebirth–get explored thoroughly in Jacob’s Ladder. Angels and demons appear in human form to assist the transition and to burn off accumulated attachments. A fun mindwalk through unfamiliar–yet strangely familiar–territory.
The Fall. A story told in the words of a middle-aged man but interpreted through the imagination of a little girl. The main themes of the story get across to her as she weaves her own magic for the ailing and suicidal man’s remittance. Many meta-themes play out through the film. A delightful trip through an imagination that grows more real than reality itself. Imagination has the power to alter and infuse reality; this film explores how it could happen. The emotional tapestry the film creates astonished me.
